St. Margaret of Lorraine was the youngest daughter of Duke Fredrick of Lorraine in France. She was the niece of Margaret of Anjou and married Rene, Duke of Alencon who was 23 years older than her in 1488. She became a mother of three but soon was widowed in 1492 where she managed the ducal estate herself living a life of self-denial taking care of her family and giving largely to the poor.
Later she founded the Poor Clare convent at Argentan, Brittany, France. when her children had grown, she joined the convent as a nun making her vows in 1520.
