New breathing crisis puts Pope Francis back on ventilation, Vatican says
conditions worsen
Pope Francis suffered two new episodes of acute respiratory crises overnight and was put back on noninvasive mechanical ventilation, the Vatican said.
Francis had inhaled "copious" amounts of mucous in another setback in what has become a more than two-week battle to overcome a complex respiratory infection and pneumonia.
In a late update, the Vatican said the episodes were caused by a "significant accumulation" of mucous in his lungs and bronchial spasms. "Two bronchoscopies were performed with the need for aspiration of copious secretions," the Vatican said.
The infection progressed into a complex respiratory tract infection and double pneumonia that has sidelined Francis for the longest period of his papacy and prompted questions about the future.
He has remained in stable condition for over a week, with no fever, respiratory crises and good oxygen levels in his blood for several days, doctors reported.
The doctors said that such stability was in itself a positive thing and showed he was responding well to therapy.
But they kept his prognosis as 'guarded,' meaning that he's not out of danger.

On Monday, his doctors reported that the 88-year-old pontiff was no longer in imminent danger but would remain hospitalised for treatment for several more days.
In keeping with his papacy, Francis has been upfront about his health. In 2021, he gave an unprecedentedly candid interview to an Argentine doctor, who published a book detailing the pontiff's physical and mental health history.
Francis' recovery from double pneumonia continued Wednesday, with a chest X-ray confirming improvement, just two days after doctors ruled out any imminent threat to his life.
The latest medical update described his condition as stable but noted the complexity of his health given his overall fragility. The 88-year-old pope remotely followed the Vatican's Lenten spiritual retreat and resumed physical and respiratory therapy after a quiet night. He continues to receive high-flow oxygen through nasal tubes during the day and uses a non-invasive mechanical mask at night to aid his breathing.
His weekly Wednesday general audience was canceled, as the Vatican hierarchy remains on retreat, following a tradition that has been a key part of Francis' Jesuit-inspired pontificate.

According to the latest medical report issued yesterday, his clinical condition remains stable within the complexity of his overall condition. A recent CT scan has confirmed improvements in his condition; however, he still needs to receive oxygen day and night. Although he is no longer considered to be in imminent danger, doctors have decided to keep him hospitalized to continue his treatment and monitoring.
Today, the Holy See has issued a new update on Pope Francis's health status. According to the latest medical report released from the Vatican, it has been reported that “the Pope has had a peaceful night.”
Francis to be discharged: return to Vatican for 2 months of Convalescence
Pope Francis will be discharged from Rome’s Agostino Gemelli Hospital on Sunday and he will return to his residence in the Vatican to continue his convalescence.

He also confirmed that during this time the Pope suffered two critical episodes, during which his life was in danger. He was given non-invasive mechanical ventilation and high-flow oxygen therapy, but he was never intubated and was always alert and oriented.
He said that a temporary “loss of voice” after bilateral pneumonia and its treatment is normal, and he said Pope Francis does not suffer from diabetes.
Asked what the life of the Pope will be like when he gets home, Alfieri said that with the continuing rehabilitation therapy, hopefully he will soon be able to resume his normal activities.
While the world prayed for Cardinal Burke when he contracted Covid and was hospitalized.....Francis' comment was in reference to the irony that Cardinal Burke was against the Vax because it was tested using cells from aborted foetuses. Not only did Francis pun about the "irony" that now Card. Burke contracted and was hospitalised, but also waved the grave circumstances of the vax and insisted Catholics have the vax.
...the "irony" indeed......
francis :
Well, the irony of life...
The comment was an apparent reference to American Cardinal (and frequent critic of Francis) Raymond Burke, who spent time on a ventilator this August after contracting COVID-19. Burke, who is now engaged in intense rehabilitation, has been a public critic of vaccines. And Burke's concerns have extended far beyond the more common Christian concern about using a product tested on fetal cell lines derived from abortions.
Pope Francis has been vaccinated. He also approved a December 2020 document on the "morality of using some anti-Covid-19 vaccines." The document made it clear that, "when ethically irreproachable COVID-19 vaccines are not available," it is "morally acceptable to receive COVID-19 vaccines that have used cell lines from aborted fetuses
just adding.....those Catholics who in obedience did have the vax, it was in obedience to the pope,
as well as directives from the pope who insisted on all receiving it.

I am so happy that we don't have to "obey" him in those matters. He can offer advice but that is about it.

yes indeed
but the difficulty arises when one applies for vax exemption on religious grounds as per Card. Burke, and it is rejected citing the pontiff' permitting it and saying its ok to have it.....and not only that but insisting it
