Francis bans Latin Mass

For the liturgy, "through which the work of our redemption is accomplished," (1) most of all in the divine sacrifice of the Eucharist, is the outstanding means whereby the faithful may express in their lives, and manifest to others, the mystery of Christ and the real nature of the true Church.

Francis bans Latin Mass

Post by MarieT »

Unbelievable, francis.

First it was, we had to get permission from the Archbishop to celebrate the Latin mass.....it was given and the Latin Mass was celebrated every Wednesday evening in the Cathedral.

Now its a full ban on the Latin Mass in the Cathedral

The Melbourne Cathedral of St Patrick will celebrate its final Latin Mass tomorrow evening. The request by the Archbishop as head of the Melbourne diocese to celebrate the Latin Mass at the Cathedral has been refused by Francis - who sees it fit to interfere in another bishop's domain.

ie/ the authority of the Melbourne Archbishop has been denied as leader of his flock (we know all too well, as have others around the world)

While we recognise that Mass, according to the Missale Romanum of 1962, has been celebrated in the cathedral church for some time, we are nonetheless constrained to deny this request.

Opportune that the direction established by the Holy Father be followed with care in this particular case.

... It's about the stational Mass of the diocesan Bishop. This is described as the preeminent manifestation of the local church...when the Bishop is high priest of his flock celebrates the Eucharist, and particularly when he celebrates in the cathedral surrounded by his College of presbyters and by his ministers, and with the full active participation of all God's holy people.

Therefore it does not seem appropriate for the antecedent liturgy to be celebrated in the place that should serve as an example for the liturgical life of the entire diocese. The cathedral is the 1st place where the celebration of the liturgy must use the current liturgical books which form the unique expression of the Lex Orandi of the Roman Rite.

I don't even know if this angers or saddens me more. But I am deeply upset and disturbed.

a solemn and magnificent mass indeed
I was blessed to be able to attend despite all the obstacles.

Fr Tattersall mentioned Cardinal Pell's efforts also......it was a blessing and the cathedral packed.
I have faith it will return when a new pontiff is elected

Fr's homily
“Final” Mass in St Patrick’s Cathedral Melbourne—19th June 2024

Feast of Sts Gervase & Protase, Homily by Father Glen Tattersall

If you be reproached for the name of Christ, you shall be blessed: for that which is of the
honour, glory, and power of God, and that which is His Spirit, rests upon you.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

May it please Your Grace. Very Rev’d Monsignor, the Dean, Dear Fathers, dear
brethren,

Tonight my mind goes back to Saturday, 13th June, 1992, when I was present in this
Cathedral. On that day, at the request of a group of lay people, then Bishop George Pell, as
an auxiliary Bishop of Melbourne, celebrated the traditional Roman Rite (the Mass we are
celebrating tonight). It was the first traditional Mass celebrated by a Bishop in an Australian
Cathedral since 1970. From 1970 to 1985, the old Mass had been under a putative ban, until
the more enlightened and tolerant approach of John Paul II began to reverse this.
In his memorable sermon preached at that Mass in 1992, Bishop Pell acknowledged
the widespread interest in the Mass he was celebrating. ‘’’What is its significance?’ I have
been asked. It is significant, of course, primarily because it is an act of worship.” Unquote.
The Bishop went on to explain the relationship between the lex orandi and the lex credendi -
the law of praying and the law of believing, and of their foundation in Christ, that is
bequeathed to us in the Catholic & Apostolic Tradition. Bishop Pell continued:
“This is a precious inheritance; it is not ours to improve or to prune. It is the source
of faith and repentance, the source of everlasting renewal. To the extent that we depart from
this central tradition of worship and conversion, that we damage or pollute this core, we are weakened and
enfeebled. ‘Without me’, says Christ, you can do nothing.’”
Encouraged by the policies of Pope Benedict XVI, a group of lay faithful successfully
petitioned for a regular weekday Mass in the Cathedral, to be celebrated in the ancient form. This
began in August, 2011. It has been a source of many graces. Tonight, we give thanks for these.
This Mass honours Sts Gervase and Protase, twin brothers and martyrs of the second
century, who gave their lives for Christ in Milan. Their father Vitalis, a man of consular dignity,
suffered martyrdom at Ravenna under Nero, while their mother Valeria died for the Faith in
Milan. St Ambrose rediscovered the brothers’ bodies in 386. They rest now with him in the crypt
of St Ambrose’ Church in Milan. What a family! In human terms, we might see this as a waste,
or a disaster. Not so with the eyes of faith. As Tertullian reminds us, “the blood of martyrs is the
seed of the Church”. Over three centuries in ten distinct persecutions, Christians persevered –
often underground – until the time of freedom, a hard won freedom, was granted in God’s
Providence. Under the most adverse conditions, the foundations of Catholic civilisation were
forged, and a beautiful and complex union between faith and culture then blossomed through
centuries of development. The essence of this is bequeathed to us in the priceless pearl of the
historical form of the Mass. It has significance not only for Catholics, but for all who value our
civilisation.
In the epistle today, St Peter writes – somewhat mysteriously – “for the time is, that
judgment should begin at the House of God.” We all hope for God’s mercy, but we must know
that there is no escaping His judgment. The filial fear of God should free us from the servile fear
of men. That, together with the Holy Spirit’s gift of fortitude, gives us strength to bear witness
for Christ and the Faith in the face of every obstacle, and to come to the aid of our neighbour who
is oppressed or persecuted. The clear and consistent teachings of the Catholic Church in relation
to human dignity are founded on our understanding of creation, and of the Incarnation and
Redemption. For these teachings to bear fruit, Catholics themselves – and especially those
exercising pastoral authority – must be credible and consistent in their commitment to justice,
charity, and freedom in the Truth that sets us free!
I return with gratitude to the words of our late Cardinal Pell at that Mass in 1992, words
that seem tonight to be even more relevant and prescient than when they were first delivered from
this very spot:
“I cannot promise you a second spring. I can only promise you a hard slog. The external
pressures on us will remain formidable. I hope and pray that this Mass strengthens you for this
long struggle. The Tridentine Mass has many virtues; it is part of a noble tradition of worship.
Through prayers, ritual and music it attempts very explicitly to convey the beauty of holiness,
and especially through its decorum and dignity it helps to bring us to bow in worship before the
invisible God, the All-Holy One.”

The Introit tonight reminded us: “The Lord will speak peace unto His people.” That peace
no one shall take from us. The one condition for its untroubled possession is our forgiveness of
those who trespass against us. Our preparedness to pardon our enemies is not an optional extra,
but a core demand of our Faith. May it obtain their conversion, and draw us closer to the Lord,
the God Who is Hidden but also present in our very midst in the Holy Eucharist. Therefore, we
abide in hope, thanks to the assurance of Our Lord Jesus Christ in the Gospel of this Mass:
“Blessed shall you be when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you and shall
reproach you and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man’s sake.
Be glad in that day and rejoice: for behold, your reward is great in heaven.”

Woah! Good for him! Is that your parish priest or a priest from the cathedral?

This is our parish priest for the Latin Mass which we have to travel quite a bit of distance for.

I also attend our local novus ordo mass - different parish priest though.

it was a good interview......but i'm wondering if repercussions if gets back to francis.....Fr Glen states that the Pope does not have the authority to remove the traditional mass.....he is acting beyond his powers as pope.....this is reminiscent of arch. Vigano's statements

wahoooo
and it starts with Denise's state :D
The Vatican has granted a parish in Texas an exemption from restrictions to the Traditional Latin Mass imposed by Pope Francis’ encyclical Traditionis Custodes.
The precedent is in action......for the Latin Mass bans to be lifted.
God bless Pope Leo XIV

just arrived

Exclusive Access to World Report on Summorum Pontificum:
Francis’ Restrictions Based on Lies
apparently Pope Benedict XVI suspected something - hence his Summorum Pontificum 2007 to protect the Latin Mass.
Summorum Pontificum itself foresaw a report, in order to adjust any issues with implementation --
and the report now obtained was generally positive.
American journalist Diane Montagna, who has long covered the Vatican, has obtained an explosive
exclusive document: the original summary and report of the Global Assessment of the Application of
Summorum Pontificum, the 2007 document by Pope Benedict XVI that freed the Traditional Latin
Mass and Liturgy.
The previously undisclosed text, which forms a crucial part of the official report by the Congregation
for the Doctrine of the Faith on its 2020 consultation of bishops concerning Summorum Pontificum,
reveals that “the majority of bishops who responded to the questionnaire stated that making
legislative changes to Summorum Pontificum would cause more harm than good.”
..and these were the Bishops that francis consulted. Recall there was outcry from other Bishops around the world that despite francis stating he consulted them, they were never consulted , and its the first they heard about it (back then).

again...reading that comment....."forms a crucial part of the official report by the Congregation ...in 2020"
...the Bishops advised francis that banning the Latin Mass "would do more harm than good."
The overall assessment directly contradicts, therefore, the stated rationale for imposing Traditionis
Custodes and raises serious questions about its credibility.
This is what we have been reporting on this forum from day 1 of its implication.
We all knew that the report was probably more positive than negative, because we all could see with
our own eyes the very positive developments on the ground: greater reverence, an increase in respect

Since the report was the basis of the limitations (and plan of gradual extinction of the Traditional
Latin Mass) established by Francis' document Traditionis Custodes, ghost-written by radical liturgist
Andrea Grillo for Francis,
we know that the document itself, in addition to being doctrinally
illegitimate (since it claims to extinguish what no pope can extinguish), is also procedurally
illegitimate and inept.

Based on lies, deceptions, no wonder it is a purely evil document.
note again "it claims to extinguish what no pope can extinguish"
we have been saying that here on this forum, from the beginning, why was francis permitted to proceed

from around the globe
Collection of Quotations Drawn from the Responses Received from the Dioceses
Regarding the Implementation of Summorum Pontificum – Courtesy of Diane
Montagna
On the liturgical, theological, and catechetical value of the Extraordinary Form
“Undoubtedly, the Extraordinary Form has challenged members of the clergy regarding the place of
ritual in Christian life and the dignity of the celebrations” (Diocese of Fréjus-Toulon, France).
“Maintaining the Extraordinary Form is the right choice, not because it is better or more suitable than
the Ordinary Form, but because the Extraordinary Form possesses its own richness both liturgically
and theologically. Likewise, the Extraordinary Form provides a stimulating counterpoint to the
Ordinary Form” (Diocese of Cambrai, France).
“I myself have celebrated priestly ordinations in the Extraordinary Form, even though it is not my
usual form, and I was able to appreciate its richness, beauty, and liturgical depth” (Bishop of
Perpignan-Elne, France).
“Many families do not participate exclusively in the Extraordinary Form but enjoy attending both the
Extraordinary and the Ordinary Forms. I encourage this as a richer experience of liturgical history
and development” (Diocese of Tyler, USA).
“It would not be difficult to assert that if surveyed, nearly 100% of those who attend the Extraordinary
Form believe in the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist, whereas drastically lower figures have
been shown among Catholics who predominantly attend the Ordinary Form” (Diocese of Knoxville,
USA).
“A good number of Catholics have come to a more fervent life of faith; many men have become more
active in spiritually leading their families, and many have gained a deep knowledge of the Church’s
traditions, which has helped them to appreciate more deeply the reforms of Vatican II and the
Ordinary Form of the Mass” (Diocese of Great Falls-Billings, USA).
“The Extraordinary Form has become a treasure for the Diocese, from which to draw inspiration and
concrete perspectives on how to renew the liturgical life of the Church” (Diocese of Maasin,
Philippines).
On the historical value of the Extraordinary Form
“To cease practicing the Extraordinary Form would be like cutting oneself off from the sources of the
faith” (Diocese of Liège, Belgium).
“As Pope Benedict said, we cannot abandon the rite of the Mass that has been used for centuries and
say that it is no longer relevant” (Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle, England).
