Who is Pope Leo XIV

Post by MarieT »

Pope Leo XIV, while serving as Bishop of Chiclayo in Peru, walked through the city streets with the Blessed Sacrament during the COVID-19 lockdown, offering a profound gesture of faith and consolation to the people.

Cardinal Burke delighted with result and speaks of "strong bond with the Roman Pontiff"
Please join me in thanking Our Lord for the election of Pope Leo XIV, Successor of Saint Peter,
as the Shepherd of the Church throughout the world.

The Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe at La Crosse has a particularly strong bond with the Roman Pontiff,
especially through its affiliation with the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major.

I urge all pilgrims and friends of the Shrine to pray fervently for Pope Leo XIV that Our Lord, through the intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Saint Peter Apostle, and Pope Saint Leo the Great, will grant him
abundant wisdom, strength, and courage to do all that Our Lord is asking of Him in these tumultuous times.

May God bless Pope Leo and grant him many years. Viva il Papa!

Bp Strickland's response
With the election of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV, the Church enters a new chapter in her pilgrimage through history. We entrust the Holy Father to the guidance of the Holy Ghost and the protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary, praying that he may faithfully uphold the Deposit of Faith and confirm his brethren in the truth. In these difficult times, may all of us – clergy and laity alike – remain steadfast in our love for Christ, His Church, and the Sacred Traditions handed down through the ages.

wowzers landslide win for Pope Leo
Madagascar Cardinal Désiré Tsarahazana told reporters on Saturday that on the final ballot, Prevost had received “more” than 100 votes. That suggests an extraordinary margin, well beyond the two-thirds, or 89 votes, necessary to be elected.

Pope Leo XIV explains name choice, opens dialogue in first meeting with cardinals

Why the name “Leo”?

A significant moment in the address came when Pope Leo explained his papal name choice. “Sensing myself called to continue in this same path, I chose to take the name Leo XIV,” he said. “There are different reasons for this, but mainly because Pope Leo XIII in his historic Encyclical Rerum Novarum addressed the social question in the context of the first great industrial revolution.”

The new pope drew a parallel between the challenges faced during Leo XIII’s era and those confronting the Church today, particularly “another industrial revolution and … developments in the field of artificial intelligence that pose new challenges for the defense of human dignity, justice, and labor.”

Pope Leo concluded his prepared remarks by invoking the words of Pope Saint Paul VI and expressing hope that faith and love would “shed light on paths of mutual cooperation and bless humanity abundantly, now and always, with the very strength of God, without Whose help nothing is valid, nothing is holy.”

Bp Strickland's prayer for Pope Leo
Bishop J. Strickland

May 12
O Lord Jesus Christ, Eternal High Priest,

Thou hast permitted Pope Leo XIV to ascend the Chair of Peter at a time of great confusion and suffering for Thy flock.

We place him into Thy Sacred Heart, praying that he may be conformed ever more deeply to Thee, governed not by the spirit of the age, but by the Spirit of Truth.

Grant him the grace to teach with clarity, to govern with justice and humility, and to sanctify Thy people in truth.

Let him be a rock for the faithful, a light for those in darkness, and a defender of the holy Catholic Faith handed down from the Apostles.

If he falters, give us the grace to remain firm.
If he suffers, grant us the courage to suffer with him.
And if he walks in fidelity, may we support him with prayer, sacrifice, and love.

Preserve us, O Lord, from both despair and delusion.
Keep us alert, rooted in Scripture and Tradition, yet full of trust in Thy providence.
Teach us to hope not in men, but in Thee – for Thou, O Christ, reigneth even in Thy Passion,
And Thou wilt never forsake Thy Church.

May Mary, Thy Mother and ours, intercede for Pope Leo XIV, that he may be a true shepherd after Thy Heart.

May all Thy saints defend him from error and guide him in holiness.

In Thee alone, O Christ, is our peace.
To Thee alone do we look,
In this hour and in every age.

Amen.
"He who followeth Me, walketh not in darkness." sayeth the Lord
