The notion that "the Holy Spirit picks the Pope," a widely held but mistaken belief, darkens reasoning and clouds the Catholic intellect.

The Papacy and the “Sacrifice of the Intellect”
Devotion to the souls in Purgatory contains in itself all the works of mercy, which supernaturalized by a spirit of faith, should merit us Heaven. de Sales
Re: The Papacy and the “Sacrifice of the Intellect”
The Pope elect is part of God's greater plan for his Church / people.
Yes the church has suffered with questionable Pope's in its history,
but the plan was for a greater good, like the efforts of Pope Benedict XVI
and Saint John Paul II and other notable giants that held the position.
So yes the Holy Spirit is working within the conclave for the election
but having said that, some cardinals have another agenda and might be
tempted to not listen to the Spirit.
But having said that again, God's greater purpose will be achieved regardless,
and as history shows us, he may give them what they sought, to make them
realise it was not a good idea....for their greater understanding.
The role of the pope is to be the 'servant of the servants," ...the great pastor
governing God's people according to revelation and the Deposit of Faith entrusted
from the time of the Apostles.
One who has an agenda, for his greater glory or fame, is not carrying out the
office as intended.
Let us pray that the Cardinals in the conclave will be open to the guidance of
the Holy Spirit and not address unreasonable justifications for their own agendas,
but to follow God's agenda for His Holy Church and people
