May 1st Saint John-Louis Bonnard

Saint John-Louis Bonnard studied at seminaries in Aix and Lyons. In 1848 Giovanni Ludovico Bonnard became a missionary priest in France with the Paris Society of Foreign Missions. The Association assigned him to Hong Kong. Later Giovanni Ludovico Bonnard was re-assigned to Annam, Indo-China (modern Vietnam) in May 1850.

He was arrested for being a missionary and baptizing children at Boasujan in 1852 and imprisoned and tried at Nadinh. Giovanni Ludovico Bonnard was killed together with Saint Augustine Schoffler.

Giovanni Ludovico Bonnard was beheaded on May 1, 1852, at Tonkin, Indo-China (modern Vietnam) and his body was thrown into the river but immediately recovered by local Christians.

Pope Leo XIII venerated Giovanni Ludovico Bonnard on July 2, 1899.
