Upcoming Novena : July 30 - the 14 Holy Helpers

The Fourteen Holy Helpers were a group of saints invoked with great fervour during the Black Death in Europe from 1346 to 1349.
These great saints individually were patrons and patronesses of various maladies, and each had developed a large and devoted following over the centuries.

It was understandable then, during the plague, that the faithful turned to their intercession before the throne of God.

In 1969 this feast was removed from the Roman Calendar, the 14 holy helpers remain ssaints of the Church, even if for some, historical evidence of their lives is scant.

The 14 Holy Helpers are:
St Achatius - May 8 - headaches
St Barbara - Dec 4 - fever, sudden death
St Blaise - Feb 3 - ills of the throat
St Catherine of Alexandria Nov 25 - sudden death
St Christopher July 25 - plagues, sudden death
St Cyriacus: Aug 8 - temptations
St Denis: Oct 9 -headaches
St Erasmus (Elmo): June 2 - abdominal maladies
St Eustachius (Eustace): Sep 20 - family trouble
St George: Apr 23 - protection of domestic animals
St Giles (Aegidius): Sep 1 - plagues, good confession
St Margaret of Antioch; July 20 - safe childbirth
St Pantaleone: July 27 - physicians
St Vitus (St Guy): June 15 - epilepsy
(this novena is recommended against the current coronavirus) July 30 to August 7

This morning I commenced the St Augustine Novena at Church before the service. Semper fi members intentions were included.

I absolutely adore St Augustine. I find such profound words in his writings, as did many mystics and his prayer to the Holy Spirit included in the Novena is one of my favourites. I organise the liturgical music in my parish, and look for every opportunity according to the readings of the day and Gospel themes to include that hymn to the Holy Spirit whenever it is possible.

"Beauty so ancient..." write St Augustine..... "You were with me but i was not with You."....."you were inside but i was outside" (as he searched )....and of course "Our souls are restless Lord, until they rest in You."

St Augustine pray for us please.

When I find people that are stubborn in their ways of life I ask St. Augustine and his mother to pray for them. He understands stinkers.

i loved the film portraying Augustine. His words were so eloquent that they could even convince a jury that an obviously guilty man was innocent. There were stirrings within because of this.....and his search for "what is the truth?" led him to many questionable sects.....

His conversion occurs when finally someone could answer his "What is truth?".......
