Advance Information about Theotokos Books, its first title Understanding Medjugorje and the author, Donal Anthony Foley

Theotokos Books is a new Catholic publishing company which will be producing a number of books over the next couple of years, focusing in particular on Marian themes. There will also be books on subjects such as the Foyers of Charity and apparition discernment, and future plans include topics such as Biblical studies and creation/evolution.

Understanding Medjugorje: Heavenly Visions or Religious Illusion? has a publication date of 28 April 2006, and is based on a painstaking analysis/assessment of transcripts of tapes of the visionaries made during the first week or so of the visions, which began in late June 1981.

Donal Anthony Foley has been researching Marian apparitions since the mid-1990s. He lives in Nottingham, England, has degrees in Humanities (BA) and Theology (BD), and his book on the subject – Marian Apparitions, the Bible, and the Modern World – was published by Gracewing in 2002. He has written articles for a number of Catholic magazines, including the Homiletic and Pastoral Review, and also maintains a website at: www.theotokos.org.uk

Understanding Medjugorje will be available through the Theotokos site, internet booksellers such as Amazon.com, and by ordering direct from booksellers.

The information in the book has been extensively researched and carefully checked, the views of leading advocates of Medjugorje have been taken into account, quotations are cited with full references, and numerous works have been consulted, a number of which are not widely available.

This work is a sincere attempt to establish the truth by an objective assessment of the facts. The author believes that such an assessment justifies the Church’s effective non- acceptance of Medjugorje. More information, including extracts, is available at:

“Understanding Medjugorje raises important questions about Medjugorje, questions which no sensible Catholic can ignore.” - Fr Peter Joseph, Chancellor of the Maronite Diocese of Australia

“Donal Foley’s work, and this book in particular, by connecting religious experiences and practices to crucial questions about the emergence of contemporary culture, is a major step forward in this field.” - Prof Arpad Szskolczai, Sociology Dept., University College Co

The Medjugorje book – has finally arrived!

Understanding Medjugorje: Heavenly Visions or Religious Illusion? has finally been published!

I am confident that the book will throw new light on the whole subject of Medjugorje, putting it in its proper social, cultural, and ecclesial context. It is essential for Catholics to come to realize that Medjugorje is not authentically supernatural, and that it has done a great deal of damage to Fatima.

The book covers areas such as: How important Church figures, including Pope John Paul II and Cardinal Ratzinger – now Benedict XVI - have actually viewed Medjugorje; the role of influential priests and theologians in promoting Medjugorje; the tangled historical and religious background to the visions; the links between the visions, the Charismatic Renewal, and the worldwide Medjugorje movement; how Medjugorje compares with Fatima, and what the successive local bishops of Mostar have said about It; the real significance of the Medjugorje “good fruits,” and why it has been so incredibly popular amongst many Catholics

ISBN: 0955074606 – 310pp, price, £14.95, $22.95, 22.95 euros.

The book is Demy Octavo size (8.5 in. x 5.5 in.), has 23 chapters and an index.
